आठ वर्ष भारत विभाजन से पूर्व 1939 में जब मेरे दोनों बच्चे डी.ए.वी. किंडरगार्टन स्कूल में पढ़ने गये तो उनके पास मेरी लिखी चार पंक्तियों की साधारण कविता चित्रों सहित मामूली कागजों पर प्रधान अध्यापिका ने देखी तो उन्होंने मुझे वह चित्र सहित कविता छपवाने के लिये उत्साहित किया। 1940 में पहली बार लाहौर मिलाप प्रेस ने "बिल्लो" नामक पुस्तक को छापा। बच्चों ने काफी पसंद किया। विभाजान के बाद 1952 में दूसरी बार देहली में बिल्लो छपाई परन्तु मुझे कुछ प्रोत्साहन न मिलने से मैंने फिर छपवाने का इरादा छोड़ दिया। परन्तु कई वर्षों से मातायें टेलीफोन द्वारा पूछती थीं या चिट्ठियां लिखती रहीं"बिल्लो कहां मिल सकती है ?" इत्यादि । जनवरी 1984 को रीडर-डाइजेस्ट में किसी देवी ने "बिल्लो" के बारे में लिखा, "मैंने बचपन में जो पुस्तक पढ़ी थी वही अब अपने बच्चों को पढ़ाती हूं। "बिल्लो" बच्चों के लिये जो पुस्तकें होनी चाहिए उनमें से यह भी एक अच्छी पुस्तक है। इसे पढ़ कर बहुत लोगों की मांग ने फिर से मजबूर कर दिया है कि मैं 82 वर्ष (८२) की आयु में दौड़ धूप करूँ। इस पुस्तक में कुछ शब्द तथा पंक्तियां किसी किसी जगह बदल दी गई हैंऔर मम्मी, डैडी बरैकट में माता, पिता के आगे लिखा है जो बच्चे माता पिता शब्द से वाकिफ ही नहीं वह यदि मम्मी, डैडी पसंद करें तो शायद ज़्यादा खुश होकर सुनेंगे। जिन जानवरों का बयान पुस्तक में है बच्चों को चिड़िया घर में या जो बाग़ में रहने वाले गलैहरी, खरगोश, इत्यादि, दिखा देना चाहिये। इस से बच्चे खुश होकर सुनते और बोलते हैं। जहां कहीं किताब में किसी बच्चे का नाम है उसे पढ़ने वाले बच्चे का नाम ले कर बोलना चाहिये।

मुझे आशा है मातायें तथा बच्चे इस पुस्तक को अपनाकर कृतार्थ करेंगे।

Preface

Eight years before the Partition of India in 1939, when both my children went to the D.A.V. Kindergarten School, Lahore, they carried my simple four line poems with illustrations on plain paper, which were noticed by the Principal. She encouraged me to get the poems with illustrations published.

In 1940, the book of poems entitled “Billo” was published for the first time in Lahore by the Milap Press. The children liked it a lot. After the Partition, “Billo” was published in Delhi for the second time in 1952, at this time, the reception was not very encouraging, and discouraged me from any intentions of getting the poems published again.

However, over the next many years, mothers used to call or write to enquire as to where they could purchase or find “Billo”.

The January 1984 edition of the Reader's Digest, carried an article by a lady about "Billo", to the effect - "I am using the book that I had read in my childhood, to teach my children now. "Billo" could be considered a part of the essential library of children’s books.“

Post the article, there was a renewed interest in “Billo” with many people enquiring about the availability leading me to invoke efforts at the age of 82 years to publish this edition.

In this edition some words and lines have been edited. It is also suggested that the terms such as for the Mother (माता) and Father (पिता) be substituted by the terms used by the child for parents, for instance - Mummy, Daddy. This would be make the poems more relatable.

The animals mentioned in “Billo” such as squirrels, rabbits/hares, etc., can be viewed by children at Zoos or parks. That ought to be relatable, too.

In case the child’s name is used in any poem, this should be highlighted.

I hope that mothers and children find this book of use.
